Where to play it
Why so many free-spins offers name Starburst
Read enough welcome offers and you start to notice that the free spins are on the same handful of games, and the Starburst slot is near the top of that list. There are good reasons for that, and only some of them are for your benefit.
From the casino's side, Starburst is cheap to give away. The maximum win is 500× the stake, so a batch of 50 free spins at C$0.20 can never pay more than a known amount. It is also low volatility: payouts arrive often and small, so players who get free spins on it tend to keep a balance and keep playing, which is the whole point of a welcome offer. Add that NetEnt games are licensed almost everywhere and that nearly every player recognises the game, and you have the default.
From your side, the same low volatility is useful when a bonus has wagering attached, because a steady game is less likely to wipe your balance halfway through the playthrough. More on that below.
The whole mechanic in one paragraph
Starburst uses a 5×3 grid with 10 paylines that pay in both directions, left to right and right to left, so a line of three on reels 3, 4 and 5 counts. The Starburst wild can land only on reels 2, 3 and 4. When it does, it expands to cover the entire reel, locks in place and triggers a free respin. Another wild during that respin expands too and adds another respin, up to three in total. That is it. No free spins, no multipliers, no bonus game, no buy feature.
The top symbols are the bar and the lucky 7, followed by the coloured gems. A respin sequence with all three middle reels wild is the best thing the game can do, and it is where the 500× ceiling comes from.
What low volatility feels like at the table
Wins land on a big share of spins. Most return less than your stake, some return a few times it, and the balance drifts rather than lurches. A C$50 session at C$0.20 a spin can easily last an hour.
The trade-off is obvious. You will not turn C$50 into C$5,000 here. Even a perfect spin at C$0.20 pays C$100.
Some people find that boring. Others like it precisely because it lets them play slowly, watch something on the side, and stop when they planned to rather than when the money runs out.
Clearing a wagering requirement on Starburst
Say you get a C$20 bonus with 35× wagering on the bonus amount, which means C$700 of total bets before you can withdraw. At the game's 96.09% RTP, the average cost of C$700 in bets is about C$27, which is more than the bonus itself. Nobody likes hearing that, but it is the arithmetic. What low volatility buys you is a narrower spread around that average, so you are less likely to bust early and more likely to finish the playthrough with something left.
| Stake | Spins to wager C$700 | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| C$0.10 | 7,000 | Hours of clicking; fine with autoplay |
| C$0.20 | 3,500 | Our usual choice |
| C$0.50 | 1,400 | Faster, more swing |
| C$1.00 | 700 | Check the max-bet rule in the bonus terms first |
Two practical points. Many bonuses cap the stake while wagering is active, often at a few dollars per spin, and breaking that rule can void winnings. And wagering multipliers vary a lot between sites: among the casinos we track, 7Bit lists 35×, BitStarz 40×, KatsuBet and Mirax 45×. Jack.com (Jackbit) advertises 100 first-deposit free spins with no wagering at all, which removes the problem entirely. Our free spins guide goes deeper into how these offers compare.
Starburst RTP: 96.09%, 96.08% and the lower builds
NetEnt lists the return as 96.09%, and you will also see 96.08% quoted. The tiny gap is not worth worrying about. What is worth a look is that some casinos run a reduced build. As with any slot, open the game info in real-money mode and find the RTP line in the rules. If it is well under 96%, play something else there.
Starburst XXXtreme and other directions
NetEnt released Starburst XXXtreme in 2021: same gems, high volatility, much bigger multipliers. It is a different game wearing the same clothes, so do not use it for wagering the way you would the original.
If you like Starburst's pace but want a bonus round, Big Bass Bonanza is the gentlest step up, though it is high volatility. Going further, Sweet Bonanza and The Dog House both have proper free spins with real upside. And if you are curious what the other extreme feels like, Wanted Dead or a Wild is about as far from Starburst as a slot can get.
Is it boring? A little. We still use it
Starburst is not the slot we open for excitement. It is the one we open when there is wagering to clear, a small deposit to stretch, or a new casino to test without putting much at risk. For those jobs it is still one of the best tools in any lobby, fourteen years after release. The full list of games we cover is in our slots guide.
Questions players ask
Does Starburst have free spins?
Not as a feature. The game's only bonus mechanic is the expanding wild with up to three respins. The free spins you hear about are casino promotions that are played on Starburst, not a round inside the game.
What is the biggest possible win on Starburst?
500 times your stake, which is 50,000 coins at the top bet. It happens when expanding wilds cover reels 2, 3 and 4 and the remaining reels line up with high-paying symbols.
Can I play Starburst with crypto?
Yes, most crypto casinos that carry NetEnt games list it, and it plays the same whether you fund in BTC, ETH or USDT. The stake is shown in the casino's display currency, so check the conversion before setting your bet.
